Melon Acres, Inc., a locally
owned and family operated farm, was founded in 1976 by Abner J. Horrall
and Sons.
Since
the beginning, Melon Acres has been dedicated to providing high quality,
value-added produce to its customers. (Abner and Mike pictured with Mrs. Dan Mol)
Melon Acres has compiled a very impressive list of "firsts" in the Indiana melon industry. Melon Acres was the first to use forced-air cooling to increase the storage time and quality of Indiana-grown muskmelon. Melon Acres was also the first muskmelon grower in Indiana to experiment with the use of packing lines to bring produce to market more quickly.
Abner's son, Mike, a Purdue graduate who majored in agricultural engineering, is continuing his father's tradition of excellence in providing quality produce and service to his customers. Mike has spear-headed an ambitious program designed to expand the crop offerings of Melon Acres. Crops recently added are sweet corn, asparagus and cucumbers.
During our 2005 season, our 1800 acre farm will be growing approximately 1010 acres of produce. Our produce acres include:
275 acres Cantaloupe
"Quality you can count on since 1976."
